Horticulture Lighting at Cobbins Nursery
Project location: West Sussex
Project Background Brief:
Cobbins Nursery in West Sussex asked Powerplus Group to design a new horticultural lighting system for its greenhouses.
Cobbins Nursery provides customers with locally grown horticultural products and ornamental pot plants. The grower wanted to find the best lighting system to grow different varieties of pot plant flowers throughout the season.
The Powerplus horticulture lighting team inspected the existing infrastructure at Cobbins Nursery and assessed the grower’s needs. They then designed a range of suitable LED lighting installations, taking into account the different varieties of pot plant flowers that would be grown and the different stages of the season and growth cycle.
The Powerplus team proposed several solutions to Cobbins Nursery, who selected Sollum Technologies, a Canadian LED manufacturer that specialises in dynamic spectrum control fixtures. Dynamic spectrum control allows growers to adjust the light spectrum to meet the specific needs of their plants at different stages of growth and development. This will allow the grower to optimally grow different varieties of ornamentals at different stages of the season and growth cycle without sacrificing the efficacy and performance of the LED system.
The Powerplus Horticulture lighting team worked with growing managers to minimise disruption to greenhouse operations during installation and ensure timely completion. The Sollum agronomy team worked with the grower to create lighting scenarios ready for the first autumn lighting season.
George Lisher “Working with the team at Powerplus, we have been able to invest in a fantastic new lighting system to help support our wide offering of pot plants, Matthew and the the team have provided a comprehensive service from start to finish”.
Particular Challenges:
Original lighting trunking was replaced and moved to better meet the needs of the nursery. The electrical infrastructure was also upgraded to handle the increased load. The existing distribution to the glasshouses did not meet current electrical regulations, so Powerplus Group installed a new electrical distribution system that complies with the 18th edition of the Wiring Regulations.
Special Project Features:
- Live site
- Worker safety
- Variable lighting control system
